Emery: Villa must learn from Barcelona loss

Barcelona's third goal at Camp Nou sealed a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery said his side must learn from the defeat, citing defensive mistakes and missed opportunities as costly.

The Spaniard added that his team had shown enough quality to compete but the efficiency of the two sides differed.

The loss extended Emery’s poor record against Barcelona, bringing his tally in 31 meetings to 22 defeats, six draws and three wins.

Emery stressed the result has no immediate consequences but could aid Villa’s development as a team.

He highlighted several defensive errors, particularly when Villa attempted to play out from the back, which the Catalan side turned into control of the contest.

Villa created clear chances to score but failed to convert them, while Barcelona capitalised on some of those mistakes.

After Barcelona’s opening goal, Villa generated further opportunities, and Emery believed an equaliser could have shifted momentum.

Emery remained optimistic even when trailing 2-0, but said the third goal effectively ended Villa’s chances.

He reaffirmed that competing in the Champions League remains central to Villa’s ambitions and that they aim to secure their place there.

Concluding, Emery noted they faced one of the favourites yet showed moments of competitiveness.
