Switzerland overtakes Germany – Klopp must stop ranking drop
National team coach Jürgen Klopp, 59, has seen the German national team continue to fall in the FIFA‑Ranking after four international matches: from rank twelve after the failed World Cup the team dropped to thirteenth place, while neighboring Switzerland moved up one place – a clear sign of the current difficult phase in German football.
Jürgen Klopp has been in office since his appointment as national team coach at the age of 59. In the first four international matches he has not yet been able to generate a lasting uplift for the team.
The latest update to the FIFA‑Ranking shows that the German eleven has fallen from rank twelve to thirteen. Switzerland has therefore improved its placement and overtaken Germany. This loss of position reflects the weak record in the Nations League.
In the European Nations League the squad managed only one win in four games. The remaining matches ended without success, which further weakened the points base.
German football is going through a difficult phase, and this is increasingly reflected in the numbers. The ranking is a measurable indicator of this problem.
Historical Review of the World Ranking
Since July 2018, when Germany was still the leader of the world ranking, the team has never again finished better than ninth place. Ahead of the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada the squad was in tenth position.
In first place world champion Spain consolidates its lead, followed by Argentina and France in second and third places. Portugal is the big winner of the new ranking: after the disputes over Cristiano Ronaldo the team climbed from rank seven to five, directly behind England, which also reached the semi‑finals.
