Ronaldo accuses Jesus of betrayal and apologises to Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken the silence on the case that shook the Portuguese national team, with a statement in which he accuses head coach Jorge Jesus of not having kept his word and of having warmed up a player like Maradona or Pelé without letting him go onto the pitch. He apologizes to his teammates and the nation, promising to return at the end of the suspension.

In the statement the Portuguese superstar explained that, after the 2026 World Cup, he had prepared a letter addressed to the Portuguese, keeping it to speak directly to the public when he would permanently leave the squad. The federation president, during the return flight from the United States, asked him to reflect on the decision to depart, urging him to continue being part of the national team.

Ronaldo then expressed his view on the name of the new head coach, stating that the choice of Jorge Jesus was correct and that, upon his appointment, he felt genuinely happy with the results achieved so far in the Nations League.

Jesus's plan and Ronaldo's refusal

A few days later, the captain received the first contact from the new coach, arranging a meeting at the Cidade do Futebol during the pre‑season training camp. Jesus presented him with a plan in which Ronaldo would play the first and the last match, with three‑four substitutions per game, and suggested that he not travel to Norway and Denmark, staying in Portugal until the return to the Dragão.

Ronaldo refused immediately, deeming it unfair not to take part in the away matches and to give up the captaincy. The dialogue was followed by Simão Coutinho, sporting director of Al Nassr, who had handled his signing in 2025. In the end, Jesus accepted Ronaldo's analysis.

Before the start of the camp, the coach went to Ronaldo's home in Lisbon for a new meeting, confirming that all the principles agreed in August had been upheld, and the conversation was described as calm.

The 30‑minute request and the disappointment

On the day of the match against Norway, an assistant of Jesus informed Ronaldo that the coach wanted to know if he was willing to play thirty minutes. Despite the physical recovery program, Ronaldo accepted, convinced that he would be called.

Jesus confirmed the need to stay ready for thirty minutes, but at the end of the warm‑up Ronaldo was not called upon, showing that the head coach had not kept his word. The captain concluded his statement with the words: "Jorge Jesus did not keep his word, he was wrong to have a player of the calibre of Maradona or Pelé warm up without letting him take the field".
