Ronaldo confronts Jesus, citing Pelé and Maradona after bench snub
In the eight‑point statement, Cristiano Ronaldo apologised to his Portugal teammates and the supporters, said he left the squad of his own accord and took full responsibility for the incident. He also accused Jorge Jesus of failing to honour what had been agreed before the Noruega game.
Ronaldo said he later spoke with Jesus and with Simão Coutinho, the sporting director of Al‑Nassr, who had been following the negotiations about his national‑team role. The forward claimed the discussion produced a list of eight items that Jesus would address in a press briefing.
According to the letter, the agreement stipulated that Jesus would present the eight points to the media after the match, clarifying the circumstances that led to the squad departure. Ronaldo insisted that the promised briefing was essential to restore transparency.
One of the points acknowledges that Jesus ‘got it wrong’ by warming a player of the stature of Pelé or Maradona only to keep him on the bench. The coach had previously used those names to justify keeping Ronaldo on the sidelines after a thirty‑minute warm‑up.
Noruega match and bench snub
The dispute unfolded during Portugal’s 2‑1 victory over Noruega, where Ronaldo began the game on the bench, was called to warm at half‑time and remained available for the second half. Despite Jesus’s pre‑match comment that he would use the striker for about thirty minutes, the coach altered his plan and did not field him.
Ronaldo issues statement after fallout with Portugal coach, faces possible suspension
Ronaldo maintains that on the day of the match Jesus informed him he would play the agreed minutes. He says the instruction conflicted with the physical programme originally set by the coach, yet he accepted the change and started warming after the interval. When he was not taken on, Ronaldo felt the manager had broken his word.
The forward also alleges that Jesus had devised a usage plan based on physical control, alternating matches and rest periods. Ronaldo rejected the suggestion to skip the fixtures against Noruega and Denmark, arguing that a captain should not miss such games.
After‑match fallout and possible sanction
Hours after the Denmark fixture, Jesus’s attitude shifted and Ronaldo left the Portugal camp, despite an attempt to persuade him to stay. Jesus later promised to explain his decision. In his letter, Ronaldo said he is ready to accept any sanction from the Portuguese Football Federation and will remain available for future selections once any suspension is served, provided he is fit and playing for his club.
Cristiano Ronaldo accuses Jorge Jesus of not keeping the promise
Ronaldo closed the letter with the words, “As I promised, I decided to tell the story in the first person and directly, about the circumstances that involved the last stage of the National Team.” He recalled that after the 2026 World Cup he had drafted a note for Portuguese fans, met the federation president on the flight back from the United States and said he was genuinely happy with the appointment of the new national team coach, calling it the right choice.
