Real legend Carvajal finds new role at Getafe despite salary hurdle
While Real Madrid bid farewell to an era at the end of the season, the 34‑year‑old Real legend Carvajal quickly found a new employer: Getafe announced on Tuesday morning the signing of the former full‑back. Despite an expiring contract and a wage cap that initially posed an obstacle, Carvajal is now eligible to play until the end of the season.
Long‑standing affiliation with Real Madrid
After 451 official matches for the Royal club and a total of 23 years at the organization, Dani Carvajal was officially bid farewell. Angel Martinez/GettyImages documented the departure, which marked the end of a great era.
Contract expiry and open future
The contract of the 34‑year‑old defender expired in the summer, allowing him as a free agent to choose a new club between transfer windows. Despite the end of his tie to Real, Carvajal decided not to hang up his football boots.

Problems in the negotiations with Getafe
Reports of advanced negotiations with FC Getafe were jeopardised because the suburban club from the Greater Madrid area allegedly could not meet the salary cap set by the league. This obstacle threatened to derail the signing.
Solution and official contract
Getafe eventually found a solution and announced Carvajal's signing on Tuesday morning. The 51‑time Spanish international signed a contract until the end of the current season and is therefore immediately eligible to play.
Although Carvajal could theoretically start on Thursday in the Conference‑League match against Universitatea Craiova, he was not listed for the tournament. His first league appearance for Getafe will only come next Monday against Rayo Vallecano, while the big reunion with former teammates is set for January 3 at the Bernabéu.
