Navarro breaches salary cap and brings Ure and Fofana to Sevilla
In the official presentation of Scottish striker Robbie Ure, sporting director José Ignacio Navarro showed how, despite a suffocating wage cap, Sevilla managed to sign the Swedish top scorer and the French pivot that Luis García Plaza demanded. Ure arrived from Sirius with a deal worth up to €9.2 million with add‑ons and signed until June 2031; Youssouf Fofana, an international with 25 caps for France, joined on loan from Milan starting 1 September.
Market operations under financial pressure
On 6 August, Sevilla launched its official bid to Sirius, when there was still interest only from clubs in Scotland, Germany and Turkey. The Scottish 22‑year‑old, 1.89 m tall, had been the Allsvenskan top scorer with 15 goals in 15 matches. Three days later the deal was sealed for up to €9.2 million with add‑ons and a contract that runs until June 2031.
Fofana, 27, with a background at Strasbourg and Monaco, arrived without a purchase option and for a fee of €1.5 million. Betis had also shown interest, but it was Navarro who secured the loan before the market closed.
Immediate impact and future planning
Ure made his league debut against Rayo Vallecano, coming on at halftime and winning the penalty that secured the victory in the 94th minute. With that performance he confirmed the need to squeeze the striker throughout the season, as Navarro warned.
Navarro, presented on 12 June at 44 years old after being Antonio Cordón's closest collaborator, explained that the wage margin remained so tight that any winter signing will depend on sales that free up wage space.
In total, Sevilla completed 11 signings, saw 10 departures and negotiated 7 terminations over the summer, exhausting almost all its resources according to Navarro. The arrival of Ure and Fofana, however, covers the lack of a reference striker and a defensive pivot that García Plaza had requested.
