PSG feel pressure as Barcola’s €145 million price tag sparks debate
Bradley Barcola has completed five appearances for Paris Saint‑Germain without scoring or providing an assist, a stark contrast to his €145 million transfer fee including bonuses. The French winger’s barren start has drawn attention, but head coach Andoni Iraola has refused to label the situation a slump.
Statistical drought after a big spend
In his first five matches for PSG, Barcola has neither found the net nor delivered a decisive pass. The €145 million outlay, reported to include performance bonuses, has amplified expectations on every touch he makes. Despite the lack of tangible contributions, Iraola has not spoken of a “bad run”.
Iraola defends the winger’s role
Speaking at a press conference, Andoni Iraola asserted, “I do not think he is going through a bad spell.” He added that a winger’s value cannot be measured solely by goals or assists. Iraola stressed that wide players are often judged too quickly when they fail to score, and that Barcola’s overall involvement remains important.
The coach also recalled Barcola’s missed chances against Atlético Madrid, noting “two or three fairly clear opportunities” that went begging. While acknowledging the inefficiency, Iraola said it “does not worry me as long as he becomes aware of it”.
Iraola further highlighted Barcola’s versatility, describing him as “a top‑level player for us who can operate in any attacking position”. He maintained confidence in the Frenchman’s ability to create chances, even if the final product has yet to arrive.
Barcola’s transfer was pursued aggressively by PSG, who sought to extend his stay amid interest from other clubs. The sizeable fee has placed each of his performances under a microscope, especially as the statistics lag behind the investment.
Looking ahead, the next challenge for Barcola is to convert his opportunities into measurable output, thereby easing the pressure generated by his price tag and solidifying his place in Iraola’s plans.
