Pressure on Neuer: Urbig ready to take the baton at Bayern

Manuel Neuer's last season at Bayern Munich is now at the center of a heated debate, with the growing conviction that Jonas Urbig should immediately take over as starter. The recent mistakes of the 40-year-old goalkeeper have fueled the pressure for a change of guard.

The goalkeeper, who will turn 41 next year, is going through a difficult period: his performances have reignited the debate about the future of the Bavarian goal. After the disappointing 2026 World Cup, which ended with his farewell to the German national team, his form is under scrutiny.

Clamorous mistake against Augsburg

The latest mistake occurred in the 2‑2 draw against Augsburg, when a lapse of just six seconds allowed Robin Fellhauer to score the fastest goal in Bundesliga history. The German press, with, described Neuer as “an old boxer one match away from becoming a clown.”

Despite the criticism, Bayern does not appear intent on changing the hierarchy. Sporting director Max Eberl reiterated full confidence in the captain, stating: “Manu made a mistake. It can happen, especially after twenty years of career. For us there is no doubt: Neuer is our number one and will remain so. We will see about the future.”

Possible choices for the Champions

Vincent Kompany, although initially planning to use Jonas Urbig, is considering fielding Neuer again in the Champions League tie against the Viking, to revive him after the latest poor performance. This hypothesis shows the club’s willingness to still trust the veteran captain.

Among Urbig’s supporters, Lothar Matthäus stands out, having praised the 23‑year‑old, calling him “excellent in his games, with a style, body language and composure that recall the young Neuer.” He added that his future at Bayern and in the national team will depend on Manuel’s performances.

Former defender Steffen Freund also emphasized that, while it is right to respect Neuer for his career, this is his last season and Urbig must be ready. The change, in his view, should happen already during the league campaign, otherwise it will be too late; if he should encounter difficulties, Neuer will still be available.

Bayern, while continuing to rely on Neuer’s experience, feels the pressure mounting to hand over the reins to Urbig. The decision on who will be the starting goalkeeper next season remains uncertain, but the rumours of change show no sign of fading.
