Borussia Dortmund push for Anton's early contract extension as defence thrives

Entwicklungen BVB-Abwehrstar have taken a positive turn as reports reveal that Borussia Dortmund have opened early talks to extend centre‑back Waldemar Anton’s deal, whose contract runs until 2028, with both club officials and the player’s advisers signalling a mutual desire for a long‑term agreement.

Rapid rise since summer arrival

Waldemar Anton arrived from Stuttgart in the summer of 2024 and swiftly cemented himself as an indispensable starter in Borussia Dortmund’s central defence. His composure and aerial ability earned the trust of coach Edin Terzić, and he has featured in every league match since his debut.

When Nico Schlotterbeck was sidelined at the start of the season, Anton assumed an even more central role, helping the defence keep only four goals conceded across the opening five Bundesliga fixtures. The solid record underscores his growing importance to the black‑and‑yellow side, and his partnership with the remaining centre‑backs has stabilised the back line.

To date Anton has amassed 94 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, a tally the club expects to increase markedly if a new contract is sealed soon. The defender has already contributed several crucial blocks and clearances, reinforcing his reputation as a reliable figure.

Contract talks and club priority

Anton’s current deal expires in 2028, yet the club has long signalled a wish to secure him for the longer term. Last week his representatives met with BVB officials Lars Ricken and Ole Book, during which clear signals were sent that the club wishes to extend the defender’s stay. The meeting marked the first formal step in what could become an early renewal.

Negotiations remain in an early phase, but both sides share the same objective of a long‑term agreement. Although the contracts of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and full‑back Julian Ryerson also approach expiry, the club has placed Anton’s extension above those renewals, indicating a higher priority. This focus reflects the importance of maintaining defensive continuity.

An early renewal would not only lock in a key defensive figure but also allow Anton to benefit from an adjusted salary, according to reports. The prospective raise would reward his contributions as the defence continues to perform strongly, and it would give the player financial security ahead of future campaigns.
