Police probe Tenerife forward’s fatal clash with Andorra keeper

Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel died after a chest collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second‑division match in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Monday. Spanish police opened an involuntary manslaughter probe on Tuesday, saying prosecutors would also be involved.
Collision and immediate aftermath
De Miguel was challenging for the ball near midfield on Monday when he was struck in the chest by the on‑rushing Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during added time, and Owono received a straight red card. The heavy collision occurred as Owono sprinted from his area to midfield to contest a long ball that De Miguel was attempting to reach. De Miguel initially curled on his knees, clutching his torso before collapsing onto his back with his arms at his sides. After being shown the red card, Owono walked off the pitch, turned around and joined teammates in checking on De Miguel.

Spain’s National Police confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation had been opened and prosecutors would take part. The club, based in the Canary Islands, described itself as heart‑broken. Its statement said there were no words of comfort and that nothing could ease the profound sorrow felt by the Tenerife community.
De Miguel, a Madrid native, debuted professionally in 2015 with Leganés B, later playing for several lower‑division Spanish sides before joining Tenerife last year.

Real Madrid players observed a minute of silence during training, while Espanyol postponed the unveiling of its new coach. Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé posted on social media, “So much sadness. There are no words.” English clubs Manchester United and Liverpool also shared their condolences online.
The Spanish football federation delayed two Copa del Rey fixtures and one Copa de la Reina match scheduled for Tuesday.
Tenerife mourns as Jesus de Miguel collapses in fatal clash
Life‑threatening injuries from on‑field collisions are extremely rare. Last year in Spain, 19‑year‑old goalkeeper Raúl Ramírez of Colindres died after two cardiorespiratory arrests following a collision in a fifth‑division match, being declared brain‑dead two days later. In 2001, Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun died from head injuries sustained in a collision while playing for CSKA Moscow.
