Police postponement turns PSG‑Lyon clash into Ballon d’Or showdown
The Ligue 1 showdown between Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon, slated for Sunday evening, has been pushed back as police cite security fears amid fresh French riots. The postponement contrasts with a title race that sees Lyon ahead of second‑place PSG on goal difference and a Ballon d’Or ceremony that now coincides with the rescheduled fixture.
Security concerns force rescheduling
The match was originally set for Sunday at 7.45 pm local time (8.45 pm UK). Police Prefecture orders forced the Ligue de Football Professionnel to postpone the game, and the LFP confirmed the change on Friday. The clash will now be played on Monday at 8.30 pm at the Parc des Princes.
Rioting in Paris intensified after weeks of student protests over school resources and rising living costs. Over 2,400 people were arrested as buildings were set alight and shops looted. A curfew bans movement in parts of the capital from 23.00 on Monday until 06.00 on Tuesday.
Title race and European stakes
Lyon sit top of Ligue 1, with PSG trailing in second place on goal difference. The French side are the reigning European champions, having beaten Barcelona 4‑2 in the Champions League on Wednesday. The extra day gives PSG additional preparation time ahead of the rescheduled encounter.

The new Monday slot now clashes with the Ballon d’Or ceremony at the London Palladium, where England captain Harry Kane is among the favourites. PSG nominees include current holder Ousmane Dembele, as well as Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos.
Luis Enrique’s Barcelona side secured a 4‑2 victory, leaving PSG with a week to fine‑tune tactics before travelling to Lyon. The postponement therefore adds a further 24 hours of recovery and analysis for the French champions.
Ligue 1+ will broadcast the Monday fixture live, ensuring supporters can watch the delayed clash despite the unrest. The league’s statement confirmed the broadcast arrangement alongside the new kick‑off time.
Ballon d'Or forces PSG to postpone their clash with Lyon
The juxtaposition of civil disorder and a high‑stakes title battle underscores how off‑field events can reshape a season’s narrative, with the delayed match now set to decide the Ligue 1 hierarchy under the shadow of the Ballon d’Or awards.
