Pisacane says Juventus’ anxiety proves Cagliari’s progress

Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane lashed out at Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti after his side were held to a 1‑1 draw at Stadio Sant’Elia on 17 January 2026, insisting that Juventus’ apparent worry signals that the Sardinians are on the right track.

Cagliari’s low‑possession strategy

Cagliari have averaged just 28 percent possession this season, a figure Pisacane defends as a deliberate approach. Against Juventus they held the ball for only 29 percent at half‑time yet led 1‑0, proving the tactic can produce results. “The Sardinians have on average very little possession this season and that is more of a feature than a bug,” he told Italia.

The final whistle saw both coaches receive red cards, adding drama to the encounter. “It could have ended with an embrace,” Pisacane said, “but Spalletti looked worried and that gives a sense of justice to the lads.” He added that Juventus deserved the draw but could have scored more.

Daniel Maldini celebrated his 25th birthday by featuring in his fourth consecutive Serie A match and finding the net. After two saves from goalkeeper Elia Caprile on Edon Zhegrova, Juve equalised through Randal Kolo Muani’s header. A few moments later Muani’s volley from a Kerim Alajbegovic cross struck the underside of the bar.

Yerry Mina celebrated the goal with teammate Daniel, a scene captured on social media. The draw leaves CAGLIARI still ahead of Juventus in the Serie A table after six rounds, having won three straight games before the stalemate. The Sardinians remain unbeaten and sit at the summit.

Looking ahead after the draw

Pisacane urged his squad to “keep our tails up and be on alert”, stressing the need for organisation under pressure. He praised the arrival of midfielders Alessandro Romano, Harry Winks and Michel Adopo, and highlighted debutant Yanis Massolin as part of a plan to control the ball better. “I do not coach myself, I coach players,” he said, insisting the team must improve its ball‑retention.

When you are under pressure you need to suffer, Pisacane added, refusing to sound arrogant despite Juventus’ potential. He believes the squad’s quality, now bolstered by the new signings, will allow Cagliari to stay at the top of the table. “As long as we can stay up there, we’ll give it our all,” he concluded.

The low‑possession philosophy was evident in the October 30 2025 clash with Sassuolo, when Cagliari again held just 28 percent of the ball. Pisacane defended the approach then, saying the number of shots conceded was “well within range for a team of our calibre”. He added that the players’ willingness to throw themselves at attacks embodies the spirit he values.
