Openda ruled out after Lens clash, Lyon search for replacement

Loïs Openda was taken to the Lyonnais infirmary after sustaining a right‑leg injury at Bollaert during Olympique Lyonnais’ 1‑2 defeat to RC Lens, and the Belgian striker will miss Thursday’s Europa League tie with Crystal Palace.

The injury occurred after a muscular clash with Ismaëlo Ganiou, forcing Openda to leave the field at half‑time. He left the stadium on crutches, prompting immediate concerns about his fitness.

Medical staff have scheduled imaging examinations for Monday to determine whether the problem is a large haematoma, a muscle tear or a possible bone injury. No precise timetable for his return has been announced, as the club refuses to take any risk.

Upcoming fixtures and medical outlook

Because of the injury, Openda is ruled out of the Europa League match against Crystal Palace on Thursday. The club also faces uncertainty for the Ligue 1 encounter with OGC Nice on Sunday, with his availability still in doubt.

Coach Paulo Fonseca must now balance a congested calendar that includes domestic league duties and European commitments, while preserving a player who could be vital in the weeks ahead.

Options to fill Openda's role

Statistically, Openda has contributed two goals in ten starts since joining Lyon, offering a physical presence that unsettles defences.

Youth forward Rémi Himbert, who broke through in the second half of last season, is expected to re‑join the senior squad as a possible replacement, though a starting berth is not guaranteed.

Other alternatives include Pavel Sulc, who can operate as a traditional number 9, and Khalis Merah, a versatile youngster who recently scored his first Ligue 1 goal after coming on against Lens.

For now, the only certainty is that Openda will miss the European match on Thursday, leaving Lyon to adapt their attacking line‑up.
