Legal battle with Nice clouds Grégory Lorenzi’s summer at Marseille
Olympique de Marseille’s sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, appointed this summer after leaving Stade Brestois, is now embroiled in a legal dispute with OGC Nice that threatens to linger through the club’s upcoming transfer window. The matter, centred on an alleged breach of a pre‑signing commitment, has been sent back to the labour court for further preparation.
Lorenzi joined Marseille after terminating his spell at Stade Brestois, the club from the city of Brest. Despite the move, he remains entangled in a dispute with OGC Nice over a promise allegedly made before his arrival. Nice claim he pledged to join them once the Aiglons secured Ligue 1 status, a condition that was met.
Legal impasse with Nice
According to Jean‑François Pérès of the Journal du Dimanche, both parties appeared before the prud’hommes but failed to reach a conciliation. The tribunal has returned the case to the ‘mise en état’ stage, requiring each side to compile arguments and supporting documents. No hearing on the merits has been scheduled yet.
OGC Nice maintains that Lorenzi’s commitment was binding, arguing that he chose the Marseille project at the last minute despite the fulfilled condition. In June, L’Équipe reported that Nice had already filed the labour‑court action, asserting his contractual obligation to join the Gym. To date, no judicial decision has been issued.

Impact on Marseille’s transfer plans
The dispute coincides with the approach of the winter transfer window, a crucial period for Marseille to shape its squad. While the legal saga adds a personal burden, there is no indication it will prevent Lorenzi from overseeing recruitment. The club must still identify needs and consider possible adjustments despite the ongoing case.
Because the procedure is still at the preparatory stage, any financial repercussions for the sporting director remain speculative. Neither party can predict the outcome, and no deadline for a judgment has been announced. Consequently, the situation does not currently jeopardise Lorenzi’s position at the club.
In the meantime, Lorenzi is expected to continue his duties at Marseille while preparing his defence. The legal proceedings may extend over several months, running parallel to his sporting responsibilities.
