Igor Paixão vows salary cut to aid Olympique de Marseille’s survival

Igor Paixão told Canal+ he is prepared to reduce his wage to help Olympique de Marseille survive a severe financial crisis, confirming the club’s request that certain players lower their salaries.

Financial pressure mounts

Olympique de Marseille has endured an exceptionally difficult period financially, with a historic summer transfer window that yielded no new signings. The club aims to meet the Ligue 1 financial regulator DNCG’s requirements in the coming weeks.

The management recently disclosed that it has approached several squad members to discuss salary reductions, hoping to align the wage bill with the DNCG’s strict limits.

“If I have to cut my salary to help the club, that is the best thing to do and then increase it later. We just need a discussion and to decide the best way to do it,” Paixão said.

Club leadership backs the effort

President Stéphane Richard, who previously warned that the club’s trajectory has completely changed compared to the last two seasons, praised the players who have volunteered for the “effort de guerre”. He noted a “very significant reduction of the wage bill” achieved over a short period.

“There are still discussions ongoing with some players that I welcome. Some have offered themselves spontaneously and others have opened the door to participate in this war effort we must carry out to meet the DNCG deadline,” Richard added.

The club hopes that these combined measures will be recognised by the DNCG, improving its standing before the end‑of‑year review.

While Paixão has not yet been formally consulted, he remains willing to join the wage‑cut initiative presented by Richard, underscoring his commitment to the club’s survival.
