Nations League: Why the DFB eleven did not fall back despite an early shock
Here much looked like an early deficit for Germany, but Jürgen Klopp managed in his first match as national team coach to hold the DFB team to a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands. Early in the game his side suffered a shock when Virgil van Dijk in the 13th minute headed a corner into the net of Marc‑André ter Stegen.
VAR decision prevents the goal
The video assistant questioned the goal’s validity and reviewed the situation. According to DFB confirmation, it was not a foul but an off‑side position: Brian Brobbey was off‑side, did not touch the ball, while he prevented ter Stegen from making a save.
Klopp explains the result
“I already thought he would review it again. It was a great corner, but Brobbey is almost square – and under the new rules that’s a foul,” said Jürgen Klopp after the match. Nevertheless he emphasized that the decisive issue was the off‑side position.
Nmecha scores amid controversy: Brobbey on the ground, Klopp defends
After the shock, Felix Nmecha scored the opening goal for Germany in the 32nd minute. The Netherlands equalised only in stoppage time, when Cody Gakpo in the 90+2 minute sealed the 1-1.
Thus the Nations League duel on Thursday evening in Amsterdam ended without a win for either side, and the DFB eleven remained in the game despite the early setback.
