Napoli sidelines MLS‑linked Lukaku from training camp

🇮🇹 By 4AllFootball ·

Yesterday night, at 23:50, all signs pointed to Romelu Lukaku’s departure from Napoli. The Belgian all‑time top scorer has been weeks away from a break with his employer and is not even present at the club’s training camp.

The club issued a brief statement saying, "Romelu Lukaku gets a few days off in consultation with the club before re‑joining the group." This confirms he is currently not training with his teammates.

It remains to be seen whether the 33‑year‑old striker will return to his parent club, as both parties have long been open to a separation.

Lukaku is currently staying in Belgium to regain fitness after a difficult last season at Napoli, where his performances fell short of expectations.

Napoli have meanwhile invested serious money in Rasmus Hojland and retain Lorenzo Lucca and Giovane as two further attacking options, indicating a reshaping of their forward line.

Sporting director Giovanni Manna said, "Lukaku played a good World Cup, but we will have to evaluate the situation. It is up to him to prove himself," highlighting the club’s cautious stance.

Lukaku’s agent replied, "Can Lukaku be Napoli’s second choice? Of course not. He is an extraordinary player and has proved it. Romelu is not someone who stays where he is not wanted," underscoring the player’s ambition.

A transfer now appears the most likely outcome. Italian media report that MLS side Atlanta United is prepared to take over Lukaku’s salary, although no agreement with Napoli has been reached yet. Turkish club Trabzonspor, which recently secured Mohamed Salah, is also reportedly watching the situation closely.
