Man Utd’s €50m winger chase heats up as Fabian Hurzeler stays on list
Man Utd are desperate for a new left‑winger after a season of poor pressing and a run of just one win in nine matches, and the club have also signalled they could still secure Fabian Hurzeler as manager despite his earlier refusal.
Managerial turmoil and squad discipline
Michael Carrick is under huge pressure after United have managed only one win in their last nine matches across all competitions. Bruno Fernandes has publicly criticised the side’s poor pressing, further weakening Carrick’s position. A Football Insider report warns of a dressing‑room mutiny that could see Carrick lose his job.
United say they are still backing Carrick while quietly shortlisting alternative managers. Names being linked include Unai Emery, Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte, with Emery described as a dream solution despite the difficulty of prising him from Aston Villa. The Red Devils’ hierarchy is also aware of concerns about senior players such as Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez.
Earlier this week intermediaries approached Fabian Hurzeler to gauge his interest, but the German insisted his priority is to finish the season with Brighton and secure Champions League qualification under a contract that runs to 2029. German reporter Florian Plettenberg suggested United’s chances improve if talks are postponed until the end of the season. He wrote on X that Hurzeler sits on United’s list alongside Nagelsmann, but his clear priority remains Brighton, and he could become Manchester’s next manager.

Winger pursuit and financial stakes
United’s transfer target is Sporting CP’s 19‑year‑old left winger Flavio Goncalves, described as ‘explosive’ after three goals and one assist in nine appearances this season. The Portuguese starlet fits the void left by United’s ineffective wing play.
Chelsea are also testing the waters, with both clubs preparing bids in the €45‑50m (£38‑42m) range. Sporting are expected to demand €60m (£50m) in January and plan to attach a €100m (£84m) release clause to a new contract.

United must also restore order in the dressing room, with a source quoted as saying ‘It’s clear they need order and discipline. The dressing room is out of control and that is the first thing to fix.’ Graeme Bailey has urged Carrick to strip Fernandes of the captaincy and appoint another leader, a move that could smooth the path for any summer signings.
