Man Utd eye Brighton’s Hurzeler as Carrick’s future hangs in balance

Manchester United are under intense scrutiny as Michael Carrick prepares for Sunday’s clash with Bournemouth, while Brighton sit third after thrashing Arsenal and eliminating United from the Carabao Cup. Fabian Hurzeler insists he is fully committed to the Seagulls despite rumours of interest from Old Trafford.

United's precarious position

Carrick is under immense pressure at Old Trafford after United have failed to win in seven games. The club have confirmed he will remain in charge for the Sunday fixture against Bournemouth but are already scouting alternatives. Reports link several names, including Hurzeler, to the vacancy.

Hurzeler, who signed a long‑term deal in May that runs until 2029, would command a substantial compensation fee should he depart. He has admirers at United and would be strongly considered if Carrick were relieved of his duties.

Brighton's upward momentum

Brighton sit third in the league, having thrashed champions Arsenal before the September international break. The Seagulls also knocked United out of the Carabao Cup, underscoring their recent form. Hurzeler’s side play every three days, a schedule he says leaves no time for speculation.

The German coach reiterated his commitment at a Friday press conference ahead of Brighton’s trip to Liverpool. “I’m fully focused on my job here,” he said, adding that the players give everything for the club. He praised the group’s unity and the work built over years.

Hurzeler also paid tribute to Carrick, saying, “I have a lot of respect for Michael Carrick and the job he has done at Manchester United last season. He’s a great human being, a great personality, and I really respect him.”

He added that football is a people business and that he will not abandon the journey he started with his staff and players. “It’s a people business, not just pressure,” he warned, insisting he will not throw away what has been built.

The contrast between United’s uncertain future and Brighton’s clear ambition highlights how Hurzeler’s focus remains on the Seagulls, while Old Trafford continues to search for a replacement for Carrick.
