Man City’s Fernandez sparks viral debate after odd teammate wipe

Manchester City secured a 5‑3 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, keeping their Premier League start flawless and staying three points clear at the summit. The triumph was eclipsed by a bizarre incident in which midfielder Enzo Fernandez appeared to wipe his teammate Marc Guehi’s nose‑snot with his hand.

The clip spread rapidly on social media, prompting a split of disgust and defence. One tweet read, "Hay un vídeo circulando dónde dicen que Enzo se limpió en su compañero y están todos enojados y diciéndole racista," while another user wrote, "I think it was just some random wipe made on Guehi’s arm. It’s not a great gesture but let’s not drive it the bad way." Both messages were posted on 20 September 2026.

Fernandez’s strange exchange captured on camera

Cameras at the Etihad captured Fernandez blowing his nose before seemingly pressing the mucus onto Guehi’s forearm, with Guehi appearing oblivious to the act. The footage shows the midfielder’s hand moving from his own face to his teammate’s sleeve in a swift motion.

A second angle suggests Fernandez may have first brushed the residue onto his own shirt before extending a low‑key hi‑five, adding uncertainty to what exactly transpired.

City’s eight‑goal thriller and its league impact

The match unfolded as an eight‑goal spectacle, with Fernandez opening the scoring in the ninth minute via a clever near‑post free‑kick that caught goalkeeper Robin Roefs off guard. Sunderland answered quickly through Brian Brobbey, before Rayan Cherki restored City’s lead.

Brobbey struck again to level the game at 2‑2, but Antoine Semenyo put City ahead shortly before half‑time after a touch from Marc Guehi. Semenyo doubled his tally early in the second half, giving City a two‑goal cushion, while Brobbey completed a hat‑trick to pull Sunderland within one.

Erling Haaland sealed the victory, and the 5‑3 result preserved City’s perfect start to the season, leaving Enzo Maresca’s side three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
