Liverpool push new deal for Nyoni as Iraola backs teen

Liverpool are in advanced talks with teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni over a new contract at Anfield. According to Gregg Evans’ report for The Athletic, discussions have reached an advanced stage after months of dialogue. There is optimism that a breakthrough could follow soon, although no agreement has been finalised.
Why Liverpool value Nyoni
The 19-year-old’s growing importance under head coach Andoni Iraola explains Liverpool’s intention to reward him. Nyoni has been trusted with meaningful responsibility in midfield, including a first Premier League start against Arsenal. He signed an improved multi‑year agreement in June 2025 shortly after turning 18. Reportedly, The Athletic more than three‑and‑a‑half years remain on his current deal, which does not expire until 2030.
Nyoni has made 11 appearances across all competitions this season and has already featured ten times this term after 11 appearances last season. Before Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Fenerbahce, Iraola said Nyoni must continue his pre‑season standards and stay ready for all games. “Trey just has to continue in the same way as since the beginning of pre‑season, be ready for all of the games. We trust him, he’s doing very well. We have to encourage him to continue learning, improving and getting experience. But he’s in a very good place,” the head coach said.

Bid rejection and squad plans
Nottingham Forest submitted a £30 million bid for Nyoni in the summer, which Liverpool rejected. Iraola made clear that the England Under‑21 international featured prominently in his plans. Liverpool allowed Curtis Jones to leave without a direct replacement, believing Nyoni was ready to assume a greater role.
Nyoni was recruited from Leicester City at 16 for an initial fee of just under £1 million. He travelled with the squad for the Fenerbahce fixture and was expected to feature, with Ryan Gravenberch injured and Dominik Szoboszlai returning from a hamstring problem. New contracts for Gravenberch and Szoboszlai have already been completed this year, while talks with Rio Ngumoha continue.
Alexis Mac Allister expressed frustration that teammates received new deals while he did not. He said he feels affection from fans but is in a painful situation with a year‑and‑a‑half left on his contract and the club not planning to renew it now. Liverpool’s intention to reward Nyoni reflects their desire to recognise his development rather than an approaching contract expiry.
