Laura Wontorra's brother lands top job in Frauen-Bundesliga

Marcel Wontorra, 35, has been appointed managing director of the new Spielbetriebs GmbH that will run the Frauen-Bundesliga, after a unanimous decision by the league’s presidency and club representatives. The former COO of streaming platform Dyn Sport takes the top job in women’s football.
Selection process and appointment
The Frauen‑Bundesliga presidency and the club representatives who participated in the selection process voted unanimously for Marcel Wontorra. The 35‑year‑old, who is currently COO of the sport‑streaming platform Dyn Sport, will become the managing director of the new Spielbetriebs GmbH.
Family ties to sport media
Marcel is the son of former television presenter Jörg Wontorra and the brother of broadcaster Laura Wontorra. The family is described as sport‑enthusiastic, often appearing together in media archives.
FBL president Katharina Kiel said, "With Marcel Wontorra we gain a proven sport and media manager who combines strategic clarity, commercial competence and strong implementation strength."
Since 2022, Wontorra has served on the executive board of Dyn Sport, helping to build the platform from its inception. His experience in digital sport streaming is seen as valuable for the Frauen‑Bundesliga’s commercial ambitions.
"The Frauen‑Bundesliga has great potential to grow sportingly and economically in the coming years," Wontorra said. "Together with the clubs we will expand the league’s media and digital reach and boost its appeal to fans, players, media and sponsorship partners."
The appointment fills the league’s central leadership role for establishing the operational Spielbetriebs GmbH. The new company will oversee the organisation, execution and marketing of the Frauen‑Bundesliga. It will be tasked with creating the operational backbone needed for the league’s growth.
The exact start date for Wontorra’s tenure has not yet been disclosed. From 1 July 2027, the Frauen‑Bundesliga e.V. will assume responsibility from the German Football Association for the league’s direction, execution and commercialisation.
