FC Augsburg recovers nerves to reach last‑16 vs Sonnenhof Großaspach

FC Augsburg recovered from a brief wobble to defeat SG Sonnenhof Großaspach 4‑2, securing a place in the DFB‑Pokal round of 16. The Bundesliga side opened the scoring early, weathered a double‑goal setback, and ultimately imposed their superiority in the second half.

Early moments and first half

From the first whistle Augsburg took the initiative, but SG Sonnenhof earned the opening chance when Finn Dahmen cleared a free‑kick after nine minutes. Finn Dahmen, the Augsburg goalkeeper, was forced to clear the set‑piece to his right. Rodrigo Ribeiro capitalised on a low cross from Mert Kömür to put the visitors ahead at the 9th minute. Augsburg responded quickly, with Ribeiro doubling the lead two minutes later after a swift counter‑attack.

Robin Fellhauer saw a chance slip at the 19th minute, only to see the ball find the net two minutes later. SG Sonnenhof reduced the deficit when Luca Molinari’s strike was initially disallowed but awarded after a VAR review, making it 1‑2 at the break. The half‑time whistle blew with the score at 1‑2.

Second‑half drama and decisive changes

The second half began with Volkan Celiktas heading the equaliser from the first corner, restoring parity at 2‑2. Coach Manuel Baum introduced Arijon Ibrahimovic and Anton Kade for Young‑Woo Seol and Mert Kömür after just over an hour. The changes came after 60 minutes of play. Ibrahimovic unleashed a long‑range effort from about 25 metres that rattled the cross‑bar.

Four minutes later Kade found space in the box and restored Augsburg’s lead, which they extended later through a further strike, sealing a 4‑2 victory. Augsburg’s composure ensured the result held despite a late chance by Gregoritsch, who failed to convert. The win secured Augsburg’s progression to the DFB‑Pokal round of 16.

The match Info listed the line‑up and the Alle games summary highlighted the Party atmosphere in Großaspach, while Augsburg’s hand in controlling the tempo was evident throughout. The venue buzzed with energy as the home side fought back. The ball was in play for most of the 90 minutes, reflecting the open nature of the contest.

FC Augsburg now looks ahead to the next round of the cup. The club will aim to replicate the performance that saw them overcome early nerves.
