Eintracht Frankfurt's thrashing reveals HSV's limits as Mainz crash out

In the second round of the DFB‑Pokal, Eintracht Frankfurt swept aside a weakened Hamburger SV, while Mainz 05 suffered a humiliating defeat that ended their cup run.

Eintracht Frankfurt swept aside a replacement‑weakened HSV, winning 3‑1 to book a place in the round of 16, as Mainz 05 were eliminated in the same stage.

Frankfurt's clinical victory over HSV

Robin Koch opened the scoring with a header in the 56th minute, followed by Jonathan Burkardt in the 71st and Younes Ebnoutalib three minutes later, silencing the Volksparkstadion crowd. Hamburg’s lone reply came from Terem Moffi in the 79th minute.

Coach Adi Hütter praised his side, saying, "We did well. The first half was clearly lacking, but in the second half we were very, very good." He added that Frankfurt are "on the Weg" to a possible sixth cup triumph.

Hamburger SV entered the match with a host of injuries, having lost to newly promoted Paderborn 0‑1 the previous weekend. Seven first‑team players were unavailable, including playmaker Fabio Vieira, recent signing Bilal Nadir and striker Yussuf Poulsen.

HSV coach Merlin Polzin, speaking before kickoff, insisted his squad were "maximally motivated" despite the setbacks. Early chances fell to Moffi’s free‑kick in the 22nd minute and Zakaria El Ouahdi’s effort saved by keeper Noah Atubolu.

Augsburg's super‑joker rescue

FC Augsburg avoided a cup‑death scenario by beating third‑division SG Sonnenhof Großaspach 4‑2 after extra time, thanks to the impact of super‑joker substitutes Arijon Ibrahimovic and Anton Kade.

Rodrigo Ribeiro put Augsburg ahead, Luca Molinari equalised, and Volkan Celiktas restored the lead before Ibrahimovic’s 69th‑minute strike sealed the win.

Mainz's early exit and upcoming league clash

FSV Mainz 05 were knocked out by VfL Bochum in the second round, ending their DFB‑Pokal campaign abruptly.

Their cup disappointment is set to be followed by a league encounter with HSV on Sunday at 17:30, offering a chance for redemption.
