Klopp backs Nmecha's goal as Van Dijk demands fair play from Germany

On Thursday evening, the Netherlands and Germany played a friendly match in Amsterdam that ended 1‑1. The Germans took the lead after half an hour through Felix Nmecha, a goal that immediately sparked controversy, after which the Netherlands equalised in the closing stages with a goal from Cody Gakpo.

Felix Nmecha’s goal and the ensuing controversy

In the 32nd minute Germany took the lead after a cross from the right found the ball with Felix Nmecha, who shot the ball into the net without hesitation. The goal caused discontent among the Dutch players, who felt that the German team resumed play too quickly and acted unsportingly.

Klopp’s reaction to the controversy

Germany’s national team coach Jürgen Klopp said after the match that he considered the goal completely legitimate. He stated: “It was a perfectly legitimate goal, there is nothing to contest about it. It is not a disgrace to resume play in such a situation, as Virgil also says. I will not be going to sleep tonight with a guilty conscience.”

Van Dijk and the Dutch frustration

Several Dutch players, including captain Virgil van Dijk, expressed their displeasure about the Germans continuing play, especially because Brian Brobbey had earlier in the match suffered a hamstring injury after a duel with Tah. The Dutch wanted the German team to pause so that Brobbey could be treated, but the visitors kept playing and scored again.

After Gakpo’s equaliser, which came from a fine assist by Ruben van Bommel, the Netherlands remained close to a winning goal; a header from Guus Til just missed. The match ended with a shared score, after which the Netherlands turn their focus to a three‑point win against Serbia, while Germany prepares for a meeting with Greece.
