Klopp makes snide jab at Van Bommel after narrow Nations League debut

In the aftermath of the Nations League match between Germany and the Netherlands, Ruben van Bommel scored the equaliser in the 90+ minute, which made Jürgen Klopp's debut as national team coach end 1‑1.

Klopp reacts with humour

Jürgen Klopp immediately commented on the late goal with humour and used RTL's microphone to throw a side‑remark at the father of the assist provider, former Bayern star Mark van Bommel. “Sensational pass from van Bommel,” he said, “the dad didn't have that. The outside of the foot must come from the mother.”

Mark van Bommel, who was recently appointed national coach of Belgium, was in his playing career more known for hard tackles than technical finesse. Klopp's comment therefore targeted the difference between father and son.

For Klopp the result was especially bitter because, as Liverpool manager, he had long nurtured Cody Gakpo. The Dutch striker now showed his qualities against his former mentor.

The Netherlands' late equaliser is classified by Klopp himself as a “dream goal”, although he described the result for the German national team as a harsh setback.
