Johan Manzambi costs €60 million and becomes a Villa hero.

The 21‑year‑old Swiss Johan Manzambi has completed the summer for Aston Villa: The Premier‑League club paid a €60 million transfer fee plus bonuses, making him the most expensive arrival for the Villans and the costliest departure from SC Freiburg. After only six league appearances in England, the transfer follows his outstanding World Cup performance, in which he scored three goals and provided two assists.

At SC Freiburg, Manzambi scored seven goals and provided nine assists in 47 league matches, making him one of the most productive midfield performers of the season. His versatility and attacking drive had already made him a coveted profile before the move.

World Cup Brilliance and Knee Injury

At the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the 21‑year‑old joker scored three goals and delivered two assists, which were crucial for the Swiss to reach the knockout stage. In the round of 16 against Colombia and in the quarter‑final against Argentina, however, he suffered a knee bruise that proved more stubborn than initially thought. The injury forced him to miss the start of the season with Aston Villa.

Villa began the Premier‑League season with only one point from the first three games, before Manzambi made his comeback as a late‑substitute against Nottingham Forest, a match Villa lost 1‑2. Seven days later he started against Tottenham Hotspur, scored the 1‑0 and shortly thereafter set up Nicolas Jackson's 2‑0, before the team won 3‑2 – the first league‑match victory for the Villans.

Breakthrough and Further Highlights

Since his debut, Manzambi has recorded six goal involvements in as many league matches, including a goal in the 6‑0 Champions‑League victory over Fenerbahçe Istanbul and the decisive 1‑0 in the league against Newcastle United. A planned move to Newcastle in the summer fell through because Aston Villa blocked the deal at the last minute, even though the Villans had already beaten Freiburg 2‑0 in the Europa‑League final two months earlier. As a result, he remains a central attacking player whose performances are already being celebrated by Birmingham fans with their own tribute song.

Reactions and Praise

Manzambi himself recently said: “If I’m honest, I didn’t hear anything on the pitch,” and added after an Instagram video that he is very happy about it. Jackson praised him: “He is a great player, continues to develop and will go far.” Coach Unai Emery emphasized: “He has a very good impact, his game intelligence and physical strength are decisive for us.” The BBC described him as one of the biggest talents in world football, while the Telegraph speculated that his decision had influenced the resignation of former Newcastle coach Eddie Howe.
