Man Utd could reshape defence with £160m Hall and Branthwaite signings
Sport commentary notes that Michael Carrick believes Manchester United can turn the season around if the club secures two key signings while letting go of two senior stars. The plan hinges on a £160m investment in centre‑back Lewis Hall and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, freeing up space for a refreshed back four.
Priority signings and funding
The priority, is to bring Hall and Branthwaite together for a combined £160m fee. Hall, a 22‑year‑old England international, has been a long‑term target of director of football Jason Wilcox and the Ineos consortium, with recent reports suggesting a price north of £80m.
Branthwaite, the 24‑year‑old left‑footed centre‑back, is valued at around £80m and has already attracted two rejected bids of up to £50m in 2024. United’s renewed interest this window would see the defender add Premier League experience and recent Nations League involvement to the squad.
Departures clear the way
Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez are earmarked to depart, clearing the path for the new arrivals. Shaw, now 31, has struggled with long‑standing fitness concerns and has twelve months left on his contract, prompting speculation that he could be sold in the summer.
Martinez, 28, has reportedly been considering a move to La Liga, with Atletico Madrid among clubs linked to him. His contract expires next year, although United can trigger a twelve‑month extension to secure a transfer fee.

Potential back four and options
With Hall and Branthwaite in place, Carrick could line up a back four of Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro, Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Hall. Yoro is showing progress despite a recent red card, while Dalot and Mazraoui remain viable right‑back options, albeit less urgent.
Matthijs de Ligt remains a useful alternative when fit, and Harry Maguire offers leadership and professionalism to guide younger players such as Yoro and academy prospect Ayden Heaven. United are also expected to activate the extra year in Maguire’s contract.
United’s miserable start to the 2026/27 campaign – sitting in the bottom half of the table and struggling in the Champions League – has amplified calls for defensive investment. Captain Bruno Fernandes questioned Carrick’s tactics after a Champions League drubbing at Como, and Martinez had earlier criticised senior club figures for inadequate summer reinforcement.
The club’s recent midfield‑focused signings – Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos – have left the defence short of needed upgrades. Hall and Branthwaite would address those priorities directly, giving Carrick a stronger platform from which to rebuild United’s back line.
