Liverpool risk a costly error by ignoring Brighton’s Diego Gomez

Liverpool’s start to the 2026/27 campaign has shown the Anfield faithful that the squad is far from complete, leaving a clear need for a versatile midfielder to restore balance. With Andoni Iraola still shaping his system, missing out on Brighton’s Diego Gomez could prove a costly error.

Defensive progress under Iraola

Andoni Iraola’s early days in the dugout have already produced positives. Jeremy Jacquet has looked a natural fit in the Liverpool defence, while Alexander Isak is finally resembling the striker the Reds paid £125 million for. Bradley Barcola is also beginning to settle into Iraola’s side.

Brighton target Diego Gomez

Brighton, under Fabian Hurzeler, have emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout sides this season. Their Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez captured headlines with a spectacular goal from the halfway line against Crystal Palace and epitomises Hurzeler’s high‑energy system. His versatility would dovetail perfectly with Iraola’s pressing philosophy.

According to Hooligan Soccer, Manchester United are the sole serious candidate to sign Gomez in January, with Arsenal and Atletico Madrid also monitoring the 23‑year‑old. A fee of around €50‑60 million (approximately £40‑50 million) is reported to be sufficient for the move. Liverpool’s omission from the chase, given the price, would appear foolish.

Julian Ward, Liverpool’s sporting director, will be well aware of Gomez’s qualities and should seriously consider a January bid. The Reds still lack balance across the pitch, and additional signings will be required for Iraola to fully implement his system. Adding a utility player of Gomez’s calibre could provide the missing link.

If Liverpool fail to act, the gap in midfield may widen as rivals strengthen, potentially hampering the club’s push to return to the top of English football. A decisive move in the winter window could therefore be pivotal for the season’s ambitions.
