Japanese midfielders shine as Bundesliga's new stars in 2026/27

Under the floodlights of Deutsche Bank Park, Japanese midfielder Yuito Suzuki lit up the Bundesliga with a burst of attacking flair, netting four goals in his first five appearances for Sport-Club Freiburg in the 2026/27 season. Joeran Steinsiek notes the rise of Japanese talent.

Suzuki's early impact

Suzuki, an attacking midfielder born on 16 June 1998, is 28 years old and his Position is listed as Attacking midfielder. He has started every game he has featured in, logging five Games and five Starts for his Club. He has contributed four goals and three assists, but a broken collarbone forced him out before the final two league matches, and a red card on Matchday 5 saw him suspended for the 2‑1 loss at Leverkusen.

Ritsu Dōan, operating as a right winger for Eintracht Frankfurt, has registered ten goal involvements this campaign, combining goals and assists. After missing the opening fixture with a muscle injury, he returned to Adi Hütter’s starting XI and completed the full 90 minutes as Frankfurt edged Cologne 1‑0 on Matchday 6. His performances also earned him a place in Japan’s squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Hiroki Ito, a defender signed by FC Bayern München, has yet to make a league appearance this season, recording zero Games and zero Starts. Persistent injury problems have kept him out of the matchday squad, and he remained an unused substitute as Bayern routed RB Leipzig 6‑1 on Matchday 6. The setback limits his chance to showcase his abilities in the Bundesliga.

Machino's World Cup cameo

Shūto Machino, the 27‑year‑old striker for Borussia Mönchengladbach, has featured in four league Games without starting, yet he managed three strikes during his 32‑appearance spell at Holstein Kiel last season. He was selected for Japan’s World Cup squad and made a brief appearance against Brazil. On Matchday 6 he entered in the second half as Gladbach struggled at home to Hoffenheim.

Midfielder Kaishu Sano has started all six of Mainz’s league outings, helping the club climb to a mid‑table finish after flirting with relegation earlier in the campaign. Meanwhile a 20‑year‑old Japanese left‑back at Eintracht Frankfurt has also started six matches, providing defensive stability. Both players illustrate how Japanese talent continues to play a vital role across the league.

Japanese players now feature for several Bundesliga sides: Sport‑Club Freiburg, Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Bayern München, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Mainz 05. Their ages range from 20 to 28, covering positions from defender to striker, and many have already contributed goal involvements or solid defensive work. The spread underscores the growing influence of Japan’s football exports.

The performances of Suzuki, Dōan, Ito and Machino highlight Japan’s expanding footprint in the German top flight, offering the national team valuable experience ahead of future international tournaments.
