Rouven Schröder lauds two Gladbach heroes after Friday comeback
Borussia Mönchengladbach Head of Sport Rouven Schröder expressed considerable relief after Friday evening’s dramatic 3‑2 comeback victory over VfB Stuttgart, ending a run of six consecutive Bundesliga defeats and securing the club’s first point of the 2026/27 campaign in the league.
Match drama and key moments
Stuttgart opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Ermedin Demirovic’s speculative effort slipped past goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas. The visitors dominated the first half‑hour, but Joe Scally’s inventive back‑heel equaliser in the 38th minute revived Gladbach’s hopes. Seventeen‑year‑old Wael Mohya then provided the assist for Shuto Machino’s 51st‑minute strike and added Gladbach’s third with a finish in the 66th minute. Demirovic reduced the deficit late on, yet Alexander Blessin’s side held firm to claim the win.
Schröder singled out Mohya and Scally as the two heroes who turned the match around. He praised Mohya’s dribbling, audacity and the decisive pass that set up Machino, adding, “Wow! Wael is 17. The way he dribbles forward, the audacity with which he sets up the goal … Hats off!” Scally, he noted, not only scored the equaliser but also refused to abandon a seemingly lost ball in the penalty area before delivering the assist for the third.
The Head of Sport highlighted the physical toll, saying the players were already reaching for energy bars on the bench by the 65th minute. He described the effort as “a huge weight has been lifted” and commended the squad for earning their reward.
Speaking to Sky Germany after the final whistle, Schröder admitted the early Stuttgart opener brought back “painfully familiar feelings”. He added, “You think to yourself, here we go again,” before declaring that the victory allowed the club to breathe again after a tough few weeks. He later said, “Victories simply taste sweet,” and “I’m very happy that Wael showed what he’s capable of and Joe Scally can keep it up.”
Schröder’s comments and upcoming cup tie
Schröder cautioned that the win is only a start, urging the team to enjoy the feeling of winning while it lasts. The Foals now turn their attention to Tuesday evening’s DFB‑Pokal clash away at Karlsruher SC, aiming to build on the momentum generated in Stuttgart.
