Iraola hails Araujo after Brighton win

Liverpool have identified a defensive gap this season and have turned to Ronald Araujo to fill it. The Uruguayan centre‑back arrived on loan from Barcelona at the close of the transfer window. His early displays have exceeded the modest expectations that accompanied the short‑term deal.

At the time the signing was dismissed as a panic move, with many pundits and supporters turning their noses up. Yet his impact in the opening weeks has been better than anyone expected, prompting immediate talk of a permanent contract.

Manager Andoni Iraola praised Araujo after Liverpool’s 2‑0 victory over Brighton.

“It helps a lot [to have Ronald]. I think we all enjoyed watching Ronald fighting. I think he’s very good in the duels,” Iraola added. “Even the first goal, I think he wins two duels in a row, he arrives at the byline and after, it’s not an assist, but it’s worth an assist. And defensively, I think he’s been really, really really good.”

Deal terms and Romano’s reversal

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano initially insisted the loan contained no purchase option. He later admitted he misspoke, confirming an option set at €55 million. This backtrack opens a clear route for Liverpool to secure Araujo permanently next summer.

Barcelona allowed Araujo out on loan because they do not see him as essential. Yet they will not let him go cheap after his Premier League displays.

Negotiations are now expected to begin, with both sides aware the defender’s market value has risen sharply. Liverpool must decide whether to meet the €55 million clause or risk losing a player who has quickly become a fan favourite.

Back in the summer, Araujo featured for Liverpool against Atletico Madrid, showcasing the qualities that have convinced the Anfield faithful of his worth.
