Inter offers Walter Samuel, Scaloni confirms the refusal

Wednesday 30 September 2026, the Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said at a press conference that Inter presented an offer to Walter Samuel to work with Cristian Chivu, but the 48‑year‑old refused in order to stay with the national team ahead of the World Cup.

Inter's offer and Samuel's refusal

Inter presented an offer to Walter Samuel, former defender of the club, to bring him into the coaching staff alongside Cristian Chivu. Samuel, 48, is known for his set‑piece management in the Argentine national team and turned down the opportunity to stay with the Nerazzurri until the World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni, head coach of the Albiceleste, said at a press conference: “Walter cares about the Argentine national team, he showed it when he received a proposal from Inter to work with Chivu. He stayed with us until the World Cup, and that says a lot about his greatness. I consider him important but he is also a friend of mine: I want the best for him.”

The announcement was placed in the Nations League Football Highlights Live Video Photo section, with references to Tennis, Drive, MotoGP and Pressing, distributed by Sportmediaset XXL. The coverage included News, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, Formula Sport, Podcast and Lifestyle, as well as sections dedicated to Scudetti, Area, Help, FAQ, Info, Cookie and Policy.

Prospects for 2027 and Chivu's role

According to sources, the proposal arrived in the months preceding the start of the tour in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Samuel expressed the intention to start a career in Europe, but he clarified that the idea of working with Chivu intrigues him without prompting him to leave Argentina before the World Cup.

Rumours indicate that Samuel’s possible return to Inter could materialise in 2027, but the Argentine federation is doing everything possible to persuade him to stay in Scaloni’s staff, thus maintaining technical continuity for the upcoming competitions.
