Getafe chase free agent Sancho to revive Europa Conference ambitions

Getafe are looking to plug a creative void that has left them hovering in fourteenth place in La Liga and struggling for momentum in the Europa Conference League. The Spanish side have put forward a formal offer for former Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, who has been a free agent since his contract expired last summer. At 26, Sancho is exploring options and has indicated a preference for a move away from England.
Why Sancho fits Getafe’s needs
Sancho’s only goal for Aston Villa came against Fenerbahce in the Europa League last season, highlighting his experience in European competition. Villa’s run to Champions League qualification and a Europa League triumph under Unai Emery demonstrated the kind of impact the English club could bring to a Getafe side that has won just two of their opening eight league games.
Having made 39 appearances for Villa, Sancho also featured as a late substitute in the victory over Freiburg, marking his third European final in as many seasons. Those outings, combined with his earlier loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, give him a breadth of experience that Getafe lack in their current campaign.
Deal details and recent activity at the club
Sancho cost Manchester United £73m when he arrived from Dortmund in 2021, but his contract ran out in the summer and he has remained unattached. Getafe’s offer is a free transfer, though reports suggest negotiations are complicated. Earlier this week Getafe secured ex-Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal on a free deal; the 34‑year‑old Spanish right‑back signed a contract until June 2027 after his previous deal at the Bernabeu expired in June.
Carvajal arrived with a trophy cabinet that includes 27 honours, among them six Champions League titles, underscoring Getafe’s intent to add seasoned players. The club, which finished seventh last season, now aims to climb the table and progress further in the Conference League, where they face Universitatea Craiova in their opener.
Sancho’s recent activities have included posting training videos on Instagram and a brief, denied visit to non‑league side Flixton, which clarified he was not on trial. Despite interest from clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Al Ittihad and Al Rayyan, Sancho appears to favour a move abroad, keeping Getafe in the running.
Sky Germany reported that Getafe’s bid is being discussed with Sancho’s representatives, following the club’s earlier signing of Carvajal. With a schedule that includes matches against Brighton and Ajax, Getafe hope the addition of Sancho can provide the creative spark needed to improve their La Liga standing and make a deeper run in the Europa Conference League.
