Aguirre brands Elliott's late dismissal as absurd in Valencia

Aguirre brands Elliott's late dismissal as absurd in Valencia

A £35 million buy‑out clause loomed over Harvey Elliott’s loan to Valencia, yet his season was defined by a red card in the 89th minute of the Saturday 2‑1 defeat to Villarreal. The dismissal came after he had entered as a 69th‑minute substitute and received a first yellow for a foul before a second for dissent.

Valencia fell behind when Pepelu converted a first‑half penalty, but Alex Freeman levelled for Villarreal before Pape Gueye’s sending‑off gave the hosts a chance to claim only their second league win. The match finished 2‑1 after Georges Mikautadze struck in the 96th minute, leaving both sides with ten men in the closing stages.

Valencia are mired in a relegation battle in La Liga, having taken just six points from ten matches and sitting 19th after Saturday’s loss.

Aguirre's furious reaction

Javier Aguirre, who took charge of Valencia this season, condemned the decision in his post‑match press conference. “It’s an absurd, ridiculous sending‑off,” he said, adding that Elliott “barely speaks Spanish, so getting sent off for something he said just makes me angry.” Aguirre insisted the responsibility lay with him, promising to address the issue privately with the loanee.

Harvey Elliott echoed the frustration, saying the dismissal disrupted a solid position and forced Valencia into an “all‑or‑nothing, wide‑open game.” He could not believe the timing of the card, which came with Valencia a man down.

Elliott's troubled loan spell

The 23‑year‑old midfielder arrived from Liverpool in the summer after speaking with Carlos Corberán, but has yet to register a goal or an assist in six appearances, totalling only 152 minutes of football. The Spanish press last month suggested he was overweight, and his previous loan at Aston Villa was cut short to avoid triggering a £35 million obligation to buy.

Sport journalist Felix Keith noted that Elliott remains under contract with Liverpool until June 2028, having amassed 15 goals and 21 assists in 149 games for the Reds. The loanee now faces a crucial period to revive his form before the season’s end.

The episode highlights the risks clubs assume when securing high‑profile loan deals, especially when performance clauses and buy‑out triggers loom large in the modern transfer market.
