Getafe chairman rebukes angry José Bordalás after Lugano demolition

Getafe’s hierarchy erupted on Thursday after a 2‑5 home defeat to Lugano in the Conference League, with manager José Bordalás openly criticising the club’s leadership and chairman Ángel Torres responding immediately, questioning why the unhappy coach remains at the club.

Lugano thrash leaves Getafe reeling

The Swiss side Lugano overwhelmed Getafe on their own turf, scoring five goals to secure a 5‑2 victory. The loss came on Thursday evening at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, turning what should have been a home advantage into a humiliation. It also marked a painful exit from the Conference League for the Spanish outfit.

In the aftermath, Bordalás erupted in anger, declaring, “I feel betrayed, I do not deserve this.” He aimed his criticism at both the players and the club’s hierarchy, accusing them of assembling an inadequate selection. The manager’s outburst underscored his frustration with the board’s decisions.

Ángel Torres, who has served Getafe for decades, took charge of the club’s affairs 24 years ago when it faced severe financial strain. He guided the side through that turbulent period and has remained at the helm ever since. Torres described his tenure as a lifelong commitment to the club.

Bordalás, appointed 3.5 years ago, has seen his relationship with the board deteriorate. Torres retorted on Cadena SER, “You must have a steel face to claim I have deceived someone after nearly thirty years. I have deceived no one.” He added that the manager signed voluntarily and is free to leave.

Torres insisted Getafe possesses one of its best squads ever, urging respect between coach and players. He ruled out any disciplinary action, stating the issue is not a major problem and that the players will prove him wrong. “Now is the time to get to work,” he said, urging the team to focus on the next challenge.

Torres urges win in Bilbao

Looking ahead, Torres said the priority is to win in Bilbao. Getafe travel to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday at 14:00 in San Mamés, a venue where they secured a 1‑0 victory last year. The upcoming clash is presented as the first step towards restoring confidence after the Lugano debacle.
