Sancho would face a 97% salary cut with Getafe
Jadon Sancho, 26, became a free agent when his contract with Manchester United ended in June and has received an offer from Getafe of €400,000 until the end of the season, which would represent a salary cut of around 97% compared to the €300,000 per week he earned at United.
Economic terms of the new contract
The Madrid-based club proposes to pay the English winger €12,000 per week until June 2027, a figure far lower than what he earned in the Premier League. Sancho has not ruled out the proposal yet and has confirmed that he will meet with coach José Bordalás before making a final decision.
Getafe's context and Sancho's situation
Getafe is facing financial difficulties and sits in 15th place in the Primera División, with only two wins in its first nine matches. The club is looking to strengthen its squad and sees Sancho's arrival as an opportunity to improve its performance.
Sancho joined Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for €85 million, but never managed to establish himself at Manchester United, where he earned roughly €15.5 million per year. He later played on loan at Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, featuring in 39 matches last season and appearing as a substitute in the Europa League final won against Freiburg.
The English forward has posted training videos on social media, including one wearing a Cristiano Ronaldo Sporting shirt, while awaiting a solution for his future.
Sancho told the media: “I feel cheated because what has been promised year after year has not been fulfilled. I’m angry. I warned in May that it would be a very difficult season with matches every three days.” For his part, Getafe president Angel Torres replied: “He signed because he wanted to. If we are in trouble, what can we do? This is Getafe. I don’t understand why he is dissatisfied if he already knew the situation.”
According to The Athletic, Getafe’s offer represents a 97% reduction compared to the salary he earned at Manchester United, and the article also mentions “Man” and “MAN” as common abbreviations for the English club. In Barcelona, the news has sparked debate about the feasibility of a player of Sancho’s caliber returning to La Liga under such reduced conditions.
Sancho is scheduled to meet with José Bordalás in the coming days to assess the proposal before announcing his definitive future.
