Gattuso’s pull sees Demme leave Leipzig for Napoli in winter

In January 2020, German midfielder Diego Demme swapped his vice‑captaincy at Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig for a move to Serie A side Napoli, with the transfer reported at between €12 million and €15 million after his agent informed him that Napoli wanted him immediately, despite the club’s mid‑season crisis.

Napoli's chaotic rebuild

Napoli were in complete chaos when Gennaro Gattuso took over in December 2019. Carlo Ancelotti had lost control, with the club attempting to fine players 25 percent of their salary – 50 percent for Lorenzo Insigne and Allan – after they refused a mandatory training retreat ordered by owner Aurelio De Laurentiis. Gattuso inherited a free‑falling side sitting eighth in the Serie A table and set about rebuilding the squad, adding Stanislav Lobotka, Amir Rrahmani, Matteo Politano and Andrea Petagna. The overhaul aimed to restore stability and halt the club’s decline.

Having never lived outside of Germany, Demme was intrigued by the prospect of a summer move, but Napoli insisted he join immediately, in the middle of the season. Amid the turmoil, Gattuso identified a need for a hard‑working midfield enforcer and turned his attention to the Leipzig captain, a player he felt mirrored his own style. Leipzig were atop the Bundesliga and on course for a UEFA Champions League semifinal, underscoring the value of the midfielder.

The German midfielder had spent six years and two days at Leipzig, rising from the third tier to vice‑captain of the Bundesliga leaders who were heading for a Champions League semifinal. His father, a lifelong Napoli fan who named him after Diego Maradona, and his childhood idolisation of Gattuso added a personal pull towards the Italian club.

“My idol was Gennaro Gattuso; every time I saw him play, I said, ‘I want to play like him.’ He was my idol when I was a kid, and now he’s speaking to me and letting me play…it's crazy,” Demme told. “Gattuso gave me a very good feeling: if he gave you a hug before the match, you’d be so motivated to play for him. As a coach, he’s exactly like he was as a player, because his mentality gives you a crazy kick.”

Demme's impact and legacy

Demme quickly justified his price tag by becoming an integral figure in Napoli’s midfield, helping the club end a six‑year trophy drought and defeat Perugia, Lazio, Inter and Juventus en route to the 2019/20 Coppa Italia. His work rate and defensive tenacity fitted Gattuso’s demand for basics like running and fighting. Napoli rose from seventh to fifth under Gattuso, laying the groundwork for future success.

Leipzig, meanwhile, remained atop the Bundesliga and had reached the UEFA Champions League semifinal, underscoring the magnitude of Demme’s departure. His exit marked the end of a journey that began when he joined Leipzig for €350,000 in the German third tier, chasing promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.

After his Napoli stint, Demme later left for Hertha Berlin, watching from Germany as Napoli claimed their fourth Scudetto in 2024/25, a title the club had not won for 33 years. “When I arrived at Napoli, the atmosphere throughout the whole city and the dressing room was not good,” he noted. He said Gattuso restored stability, allowing Napoli to eventually reach the summit of Italian football under later managers Luciano Spalletti and Antonio Conte.
