Fulham's €42m gamble on Gonzalo García aims to boost attack

Fulham have secured Spanish striker Gonzalo García from Real Madrid, paying up to €42 million to make him the club’s joint‑record signing as they look to reinforce a forward line that will contest starting spots with Rodrigo Muniz in the Premier League for the west London side.

The signing addresses Fulham’s need for a proven goal‑scorer as the Cottagers prepare for the upcoming season. García will compete with Rodrigo Muniz for a starting berth, giving the west London side additional options up front.

The deal is valued at up to €42 million (£36m), making García a joint‑most expensive acquisition alongside Kevin, who arrived last summer. He has agreed to a five‑year contract with an optional extra year, while Real Madrid secured a 30 percent sell‑on clause and a right of first refusal.

García, a Spain youth international, progressed through Real Madrid’s youth system and worked with Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa during his development. He flourished under Arbeloa, netting 60 goals in two seasons for Castilla.

He made his breakthrough at last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, where he claimed the tournament’s top scorer award.

Previously, García served as Kylian Mbappé’s understudy at Real Madrid, and head coach Jose Mourinho reportedly wanted to give the 22‑year‑old a chance to impress in pre‑season before the transfer. At Fulham, he will aim to realise his potential under Álvaro’s guidance and fight for regular minutes.
