French pressure tests Belgium while Vandevoordt stops Barcola

French pressure tests Belgium while Vandevoordt stops Barcola

At the Stade de France on Monday 5 October 2026, the Rode Duivels opened their UEFA Nations League fourth‑matchday encounter with France to a 0‑0 stalemate at the 21st minute. The live broadcast on Radio 1 and the match‑centre page showed both sides probing for an opening in a tightly contested first half.

The Belgian side closed a hectic international window with this clash, hoping to finish the interland period on a high note. Fans wondered whether the Belgians could pull off a surprise in Paris.

French pressure tests Belgium

From the first whistle, Les Bleus kept the Belgian back line under relentless pressure, dominating possession on their own half. Barcola repeatedly surged down the left flank, forcing the Belgian goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt into a series of reflex saves, including a spectacular stop at the 20th minute that kept the score level.

French attacks intensified as Ousmane Dembélé and other forwards pressed high, while the Belgian defence struggled to clear crosses. At the 9th minute the French side continued to press, but a mis‑timed header from Lepaul failed to trouble the keeper.

Belgian attacks find footing

Belgium’s own forward line began to answer the French pressure. Lukebakio’s clever movement created a chance for Vanaken, who narrowly missed a cross, while Romelu Lukaku forced a save from French keeper Restes after a quick samba‑style turn.

Later, a low drive from Lukaku tested the French defence, prompting a quick reaction from the goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Timothy Castagne, Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy each completed a full ninety minutes for the first time in the Nations League, while Senne Lammens and Youri Tielemans were rested after reaching their minute caps.

The match also evoked memories of Belgium’s last victory over France in the Nations League, achieved on 7 June 2015 when Marouane Fellaini and Marouane Nainggolan helped secure a 3‑4 win after a dramatic finish.

Romelu Lukaku, who entered the game with 94 international goals, sits fifth on the all‑time scoring list, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo (146), Lionel Messi (125) and Ali Daei (108). A further goal tonight would see him overtake Sunil Chhetri’s 93‑goal tally.
