Feyenoord says goodbye to German captain as he heads to Wolfsburg
Feyenoord confirmed the departure of German goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther, who after four seasons and 125 official matches will join VfL Wolfsburg in the 2. Bundesliga. The move ends his spell at the Rotterdam club where he captained the side last season.
The Dutch side announced that the Duitse stopper, who served as captain in Rotterdam, has signed a contract with VfL Wolfsburg in his homeland. His exit follows the club’s presentation of a new goalkeeper, fellow German Tjark Ernst, earlier today.
Feyenoord introduced Tjark Ernst as the immediate replacement for the departing keeper, giving the club a fresh option between the posts. After Ernst’s signing was finalised, Wellenreuther received the green light to complete his transfer to the Bundesliga club.
Wellenreuther had already been poised to leave, awaiting the club’s decision on his successor. The green light arrived promptly once Ernst’s deal was confirmed, allowing the transfer to Wolfsburg to be finalised.
During his four‑year tenure, the German featured in 125 official duels for Feyenoord. He collected the Dutch league title in 2023 and added the Johan Cruijff Shield and KNVB Cup in 2024 to his trophy cabinet.

"What was beautiful," Wellenreuther wrote on the club’s website. "When I arrived I did not know what to expect. My time here gave me far more than I could have imagined. I came as a stand‑in and leave as captain. A very proud captain." He added, "Feyenoord is not just any club; it is unique in every way. I have lived unforgettable moments here and felt appreciation from my first minutes. That appreciation grew, as did my love for the club and its supporters." Wellenreuther admitted, "Leaving Feyenoord is not easy. I will miss the intense experience we shared. I am still addressed as ‘the rescue’ in the 2023 title race. Those memories are hard to leave behind as a goalkeeper, and I am glad I could provide them." Reflecting on his achievements, he said, "Winning the league was insane, as were the great Champions League matches inside and outside De Kuip, plus the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruijff Shield victories. It was an honour to wear this shirt and play for this club. A part of me will always remain a Feyenoorder. To everyone inside the club and all who carry Feyenoord in their hearts: thank you for everything." © Pim Ras FotografieTimon Wellenreuther.Feyenoord.
