Sunderland target Ligue 1 star Methalie to shore up Le Bris’ defence

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Sunderland are poised to sign Toulouse left‑back Dayann Methalie, the 20‑year‑old French defender, as the Black Cats look to add quality and depth to a defence that has struggled for consistency, journalist Pete O’Rourke reports, ahead of the new campaign.

The club hopes the French defender will bolster Le Bris’ side this off‑season, providing the much‑needed reinforcement.

Methalie enjoyed an impressive rise in French football, registering two goals and two assists in 30 matches for Toulouse across all competitions last season.

He is described as one of the most gifted left‑backs in Ligue 1, highlighting his potential value to Sunderland.

His current contract with Toulouse runs until the summer of 2030, meaning the Black Cats could find it difficult to secure him cheaply in the immediate transfer window.

On the pitch, Methalie is a good tackler who times his challenges well and clears danger when opponents attack. He can also create chances, chip in with goals from the left flank, and is versatile enough to play as a centre‑back or left‑sided wide player if required.

Regis Le Bris believes Methalie could add more quality and depth to Sunderland’s defence in the long run and challenge for a regular first‑team spot at the Stadium of Light. At 20, he has the potential to become a future star in English football.

Le Bris would be wise to get a deal done this summer, as the youngster could help the Wearside club compete across all competitions.

Sunderland must navigate the long‑term contract and adapt the French defender to the pace of English football before finalising any agreement, a process that will shape the futures of both player and club.
