Europa League

Lynch blames crowd trouble for derailing Derry's Europa League hopes

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Derry City manager Tiernan Lynch said the crowd trouble that caused a temporary stoppage at the Brandywell on Thursday night adversely affected his side's chances in their Europa League defeat to CSKA Sofia. The Candystripes lost 2‑1, and the first‑qualifying‑round tie 5‑3 on aggregate.

In the first half, a loud home support lifted the atmosphere for Derry City, and the Candystripes looked like they would go on to win the game until referee Jasmin Sabotic was forced to halt play before the hour mark after a section of the visiting support tried to enter the home section in the shared Southend Park stand.

Two minutes into the second half, Ellis Chapman headed the ball past the CSKA goalkeeper, giving Derry a 1‑0 lead on the night and levelling the tie on aggregate.

The celebration was cut short when the visiting fans attempted to breach the stand, prompting Jasmin Sabotic to stop the match. The interruption lasted nearly 15 minutes as some Derry City fans entered the playing surface before order was restored.

When play resumed, Ioannis Pittas, who had scored a double in the first leg, exploited a defensive mix‑up to put CSKA Sofia back in front in the 76th minute.

Derry City pressed for a late leveller, but Barry Cotter inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 108th minute, leading to objects being thrown at CSKA keeper Dimiar Emitov from the North Stand.

The match ended 2‑1 to CSKA Sofia, confirming a 5‑3 aggregate defeat for the Candystripes. Lynch told NI’s Eric White that the 13‑14 minute break gave the visitors a lifeline and had a huge impact on the game.

He also said his own son was in the crowd, raising personal safety concerns, and praised the stewards for handling the situation. Despite the loss, Lynch said he was proud of his players’ fight and character in the second half.
