Everton snub £4.3m striker as Moyes weighs youth over experience

Everton have rejected a reported £4.3m bid for veteran striker Mauro Icardi, leaving David Moyes to decide whether to choose youth over experience as the club heads into the January transfer window. Striker should Moyes choose youth over experience?
The Toffees entered the 2026/27 campaign hoping to build on improved organisation under Moyes, but summer business left a significant gap in attack. Beto departed for Fiorentina for a reported £14.6m and a proposed move for Folarin Balogun collapsed before the deadline, leaving Thierno Barry to shoulder most of the responsibility up front.
Everton’s interest in Icardi emerged after the Argentine left Galatasaray in July 2026. Valencia abandoned their pursuit on 21 October when the striker asked for €5m, roughly £4.3m, and Real Betis have also been linked with the 33‑year‑old, but the same financial hurdle has stalled any confirmed offer.
Icardi’s profile and price tag
Icardi scored 14 league goals and supplied one assist in 31 appearances during his final Turkish league season in 2025/26. At 33, he offers proven penalty‑box instincts and intelligent movement, yet Everton would need to assess his fitness, wages and suitability for Moyes’ collective approach before committing to a payment of that size.
Club Brugge forward Nicolò Tresoldi presents a contrasting option. The 22‑year‑old Germany Under‑21 international has reportedly netted nine goals in 12 appearances across all competitions this season, including a Champions League hat‑trick against Inter Milan. Everton scouts watched him against Lens on 21 October, and while a transfer fee would be required, competition for his signature could push the price higher.
Moyes’ recruitment philosophy
Moyes traditionally values commitment, physical presence and intelligent movement from his centre‑forward. He argues that Barry needs competition, not another expensive gamble, and that a younger striker may need time to settle but could serve the club for several seasons.
By snubbing Icardi, Everton keep their finances under control but must still find a partner for Barry. For the Argentine, the rejected £4.3m demand means he will look elsewhere, while Tresoldi remains a potential long‑term solution that aligns with Moyes’ preference for youth over experience.
