Newcastle United bring in Soffia Kelly as emergency cover

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Soffia Kelly on an emergency loan that will run for the next two weeks, the club announced in an official press release earlier today. The 19‑year‑old Barry‑born stopper arrives as immediate cover for injured first‑choice keeper Anna Tamminen.

Kelly was named on the bench as the Magpies drew 2‑2 with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this afternoon, but she did not feature on the pitch. The loan provides the team with depth while Tamminen recovers from her injury.
Having progressed through the Aston Villa academy, Kelly became the first graduate to sign professional terms with the club in March 2025. She has been included in the first‑team squad on several occasions but has yet to make a senior debut for the Villans.
During the second half of last season, Kelly spent time on loan at Scottish Women’s Premier League side Rangers, gaining valuable experience in senior football. Her performances earned her a call‑up to the Wales squad, though she remains awaiting her senior debut for the Red Dragons.
Looking ahead, Kelly could be involved in Newcastle United’s lineup when they face Durham in the Subway Players Cup next weekend, offering the Magpies additional options between the posts.
