Everton weigh £25m defender as sale clouds Moyes' plans

Everton weigh £25m defender as sale clouds Moyes' plans

Everton eye this defender as a £25m option, yet the Toffees’ owner‑group sale clouds whether Moyes should invest despite the uncertainty. David Moyes is monitoring 21‑year‑old Tiago Gabriel of US Lecce, whose aerial presence and passing fit the club’s defensive philosophy.

Defensive discipline and league standing

Everton have begun the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a measure of defensive discipline. Eight league matches have yielded two wins, four draws and two defeats, with eight goals scored and nine conceded. The Toffees sit ninth in the table, but limited squad depth leaves little room for complacency.

Moyes bolstered several areas in the summer, bringing in Brennan Johnson for a reported £22m, Merlin Röhl for £21m and Tyrique George for £18m, while Jack Grealish arrived on loan. At the same time, Iliman Ndiaye departed for Manchester City in a reported £60m move and Beto left for Fiorentina for £15m. These transactions illustrate the club’s willingness to spend, yet the ownership Group’s potential sale adds a financial overlay.

Targeted centre‑back and market interest

The primary target is Portuguese‑born centre‑back Tiago Gabriel, a 21‑year‑old currently at US Lecce. Italian reports value him between £20.9m and £25.1m and list Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Roma as competing admirers. Gabriel has recorded 38 clearances and two headed goals this season, suggesting he can contribute in possession.

Everton already have James Tarkowski, Jarrad Branthwaite, Michael Keane and Jake O’Brien available at centre‑back. Keane’s contract expires in 2027, Tarkowski is approaching the later stages of his career and O’Brien has limited minutes, raising questions about his immediate role. Branthwaite provides a long‑term foundation, while Tarkowski offers experience and leadership.

Spending up to £25m on Gabriel would require careful judgement while the Friedkin Group’s reported decision to put Everton up for sale could restrict upfront fees. A January signing might secure succession before Keane’s contract ends, but waiting until summer could invite stronger competition and drive the price higher. Moyes must balance defensive reinforcement with the need to protect funds for other urgent areas.

The club’s next move will likely be decided in the coming weeks as the winter transfer window approaches, with negotiations expected to test both the player’s valuation and the Toffees’ financial flexibility.
