Diomandé’s late heroics eclipse Vini’s muted return for Real Madrid

Real Madrid returned to the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday (21) for their Champions League group‑stage clash with RB Leipzig, and José Mourinho’s side secured a 4‑1 victory. Vinícius Junior started after a four‑match suspension, while Diomandé entered later and delivered an assist and a spectacular goal.

Goal tally and Leipzig’s reply

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring, followed by a strike from Arda Güler and a finish by Kylian Mbappé. Leipzig’s consolation came from Tidiam Gomis. The three‑goal haul gave the Blancos a comfortable lead before the final minutes reshaped the narrative.

Vinícius Junior’s muted impact

Vinícius Junior was the only Brazilian in the starting eleven, returning after missing the LaLiga match against Villarreal due to a red‑card suspension. He managed two long‑range attempts that were saved by Leipzig’s keeper Maarten Vandervoordt and was jeered after a misplaced pass to Mbappé.

Diomandé’s decisive cameo

In the 84th minute Diomandé replaced the under‑performing Vini and immediately influenced the game. He supplied the decisive pass to Mbappé and, moments later, headed home a thunderous finish that sealed the win. His late heroics turned a comfortable lead into a dominant finish.

Thibaut Courtois was the standout in the first half, conceding an expected‑goals (xG) of 0.91 despite two clear chances from Leipzig – a volley from Romulo and a close‑range effort from Christopher Nkunku. Without his interventions the German side could have led 2‑0 at the break.

Mourinho’s midfield reshuffle featured the unprecedented pairing of Bernardo Silva with Eduardo Camavinga, while Federico Valverde reverted to right‑back, pushing Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander‑Arnold to the bench. The plan aimed for greater possession and midfield control, a goal partially achieved against Leipzig.

Endrick and Éder Militão were named among the substitutes, with Rodrygo still sidelined by injury. Valverde’s deployment on the right allowed Arda Güler to operate as an attacking midfielder, linking up with Mbappé and creating the space for Diomandé’s late surge.

The next challenge for Real Madrid comes in the El Clásico against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Sunday (25) at 17:00 Brasília time. Leipzig will host Elversberg in the Bundesliga on Saturday (24) at 10:30. The Portuguese word Com appears in the original report.
