Didier Deschamps takes a sabbatical year after the 2026 World Cup
Didier Deschamps, head coach of the France team since 2012, announced that he is taking a sabbatical year after the 2026 World Cup, enjoying family rest and sporting activities such as padel. This break comes as he was considering extending his coaching career beyond his current role.
A year of rest announced by L’Equipe
As recently reported by L’Equipe, the 2018 world champion and finalist of the 2022 World Cup as well as Euro 2016, wants to take his time and detach from the daily routine of national football for twelve months. At 57, he is using this free time to recharge with his loved ones.
International approaches despite the break
Despite his intention to rest, several clubs have shown interest. Al‑Ahli, the Saudi giant, is said to have contacted “La Dèche” a few weeks after the 2026 World Cup, offering a three‑season contract with a very high salary, an offer that was turned down. In Italy, his name circulated, but it was the Turkish federation that approached him in September, according to Le Figaro. Turkey, which had just dismissed Vincenzo Montella after four defeats in the Nations League, saw its Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray supporters call on Deschamps for rescue, without success.
Arda Turan, former Turkish midfielder, is now being touted for the job, heading Shakhtar Donetsk. Despite these pressures, Deschamps remains highly regarded in Turkey, but he has not yet responded to these proposals.
The French coach has already received genuine approaches, but he has made it clear that he wants to enjoy his sabbatical year before considering a new challenge, whatever it may be.
After this break, it remains to be seen whether Didier Deschamps will accept a position in a country where the passion for football is as strong as that of France.
