Davies' Bayern outplay David's Atletico in Champions League clash

Davies' Bayern outplay David's Atletico in Champions League clash

Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David finally faced each other on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League as Bayern Munich travelled to Atlético Madrid, and Davies' display helped the German side secure a 2‑0 win at the Estadio Metropolitano. The two Canadian stars shared the pitch for roughly four minutes before the match was decided.

First Canadian clash on the European stage

Davies started on Bayern’s left wing and remained on the field for 78 minutes. David entered the match as a substitute for the Spanish side Atlético Madrid in the 74th minute. Bayern were already two goals up by the time David came on, leaving him unable to spark a comeback.

Lennart Karl gave the visitors the lead nine minutes after the break. Konrad Laimer doubled Bayern’s advantage in the 74th minute, moments before David replaced Julian Alvarez. A defensive mix‑up for Atlético Madrid allowed Karl’s strike to open the scoring.

National team boss and Bayern's Champions League trajectory

National team manager Jesse Marsch, who selected both Canadians for his November Nations League squad against Guatemala, watched the game from his home in Mexico. Marsch said, “We are developing the game so that we can continue to see Canadians matching up against each other at the highest level, whether it’s in the Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga or the Champions League.” He added, “Alphonso and Jonathan are generational talents, very unique for any country, and it’s exciting for us as Canadians and fans of the national team.”

Bayern now sit on a record of two wins and two draws after four group matches. They have not lost a competitive match this season, having drawn 2‑2 with Borussia Dortmund in the Derby on Saturday to remain top of the Bundesliga.

Recent Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane, who assisted Davies’ goal against Arsenal, missed the chance to extend his Champions League scoring run on Tuesday. A goal would have marked his 11th consecutive UCL match with a goal, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record from 2017‑18. The streak stopped at ten, and Kane can try to start a new run against Lille on 25 November.

Atletico Madrid's season and David's role

Atletico Madrid dropped to one win, one draw and two defeats after four Champions League games. Bayern’s victory put them four points clear and made them the first side to win away at the Estadio Metropolitano this season. Atletico’s only earlier league losses this campaign were away defeats to Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao. Their 9‑1‑1 LaLiga record after eleven matches is second only to Barcelona’s 10‑0‑1 start.

David has scored three goals and provided two assists in six league appearances, including a brace in September and a goal in the Madrid Derby. Since the international break he has added a single assist while Julian Alvarez has reclaimed a leading role in the attack. Alvarez netted important strikes against Stuttgart and Deportivo de A Coruña before being held scoreless in the 2‑0 win over Levante, a match in which David again came off the bench.

David’s limited minutes against Bayern will be a concern as he hopes for more time on Sunday’s home clash with league leaders Barcelona. Bayern, meanwhile, turn their attention to a trip to Mainz on Saturday.

A Canadian Soccer Daily tweet read: “ALPHONSO DAVIES TIES IT FOR BAYERN MUNICH VS. ARSENAL”, tagging #Atleti and celebrating the Canadian’s impact.
