Chaos at Getafe after 2-5 defeat, Ajax awaits response

On Thursday's Conference League‑evening, Getafe witnessed a public clash between chairman Ángel Torres and coach José Bordalás, after the club lost 2-5 to FC Lugano. The dispute escalated in an interview on Cadena SER, where Torres left the door open for the coach.

Loss and coach complaint

The 2-5 defeat to Lugano left Bordalás feeling betrayed; he said: “I feel betrayed. What has been promised to me year after year has not been delivered.” He argued that the club did not have a squad capable of handling the busy schedule with three competitions, a point he had emphasized since May. The coach tried to give players rest during the match, but the intervention resulted in an even heavier defeat and he now fears injury problems if he has to keep using the same players.

Torres' hard reaction

Chairman Ángel Torres responded sharply via Cadena SER: “The door is open. I don’t understand what he is doing here if he is so dissatisfied.” He emphasized that Bordalás himself chose to sign his contract and that Getafe has one of his best squads. Torres, who has been with the club for thirty years, added: “You must have a huge slab for your head …”

Torres rejects the accusations and states that the players deserve more respect from their coach. He announces no disciplinary measures and has not yet spoken with Bordalás; a conversation to clear the air is not currently on the agenda.

The chairman expects the players to outplay their coach on the field. Despite the harsh words, he remains optimistic about the quality of the squad and believes the team will overcome the upcoming challenges.

Getafe will appear on 17 December in Amsterdam against Ajax in the Conference League. Ahead of that match, the Spanish side already has one point from two games, including a 1-1 draw against Universitatea Craiova. Additionally, a away match against Athletic Club awaits on Sunday.

The internal chaos underscores the tension that arises when a club has to balance the national league, Copa del Rey and European commitments. The situation shows how an overloaded schedule can undermine the relationship between chairman and coach.

With the upcoming clash against Ajax on the horizon, the outcome of this public battle between Torres and Bordalás will undoubtedly attract extra attention and could affect Getafe's performances.
